Jeff Celniker scored 5 times bringing him to a record 50 goals for the season and the Lakers breezed past Vernon by the score.
Celniker was brilliant once again with his outstanding stick handling and precision shooting. Conner Silverstein provided the stops in goal and had a fine game in net.
Next up for Mountain Lakes is Halvorsen playoff game Saturday February 19th at 6:15pm.
The Lakers defeated the Big North Division leader Mahwah 4-2. The Lakers penetrated the Mahwah trap oriented defense with timely goals from Captain Nick Deloia (1), Elliot Vorel (1), and Jeff Celnicker (2). The defense played with their backs to the wall on many occasions due to some untimely offensive penalties. John Spagnola, Tyler Devore and assistant captain Andrew Portnoy played courageously in the defensive struggle. Goalie Gavin Spray was brilliant in goal, allowing only the two power play goals. The Lakers, now 15-4-1, look to gain respect around the state after defeating Mahwah, the number 11th ranked team in the state
In what proved to be a difficult victory, the Lakers defeated Montville by the score of 5-2. Senior goalie Conner Silverstien was impressive in goal, making some difficult saves and keeping his team with in striking distance. Senior assistant captain Andrew Portnoy led the defense, as he has all year, denying Lakers’ opponents of quality scoring chances. Senior Captains Billy Burgoyne and Nick Deloia led the offensive charge with an inspirational second intermission locker room “chat”, which at the time was sorely needed as the Lakers were trailing 2-1. Jeff Celnicker and Joe Spagnola provided the offensive fire power as they each scored twice. The Lakers added an open net goal to seal the victory. The senior day victory now has the Lakers at 13-4-1 on the season.
After disappointing loses to two Mennen Division opponents, Chatham and Randolph, in games that saw plenty of shots from the Lakers but few quality scoring chances, Mountain Lakes regained their winning ways with a 10-0 shutout of Pequannock. The shutout was led by senior goalie Conner Silverstein who was perfect on the evening. Conner stymied Pequannock with his unyielding presence and stopped every attempt with purpose. Jeff Celnicker led the offensive charge with another hat trick. Captains Billy Burgoyne and Nick DAloia added goals, as well as Alec Fernandez, Ryan Gecawich, and also Matt DAloia who scored his first varsity goal. The game was shortened shortly after the start of the third period due to the 10 goal mercy rule. The Lakers improve to 11-4-1.
After taking a 2-0 lead with 53 seconds left to play in the first period, the Lakers let up two goals to Chatham on defensive breakdowns. With the score tied 3-3 in the second period, the Lakers committed some costly and questionable penalties and handed Chatham the victory 7-4. Jeff Celniker provided the offense with some shifty puck handling and notching yet another hat trick. Nick D'Aloia added a short handed goal. Coach Lio was disappointed in the boys’ lack of discipline and looks to get his squad back in focus this Saturday against a tough Randolph team,
The Lakers, led by goalie Gavin Spray who stopped all 21 shots, shut out Pequannock 10-0 in a game shortened due to the 10 goal mercy rule. The game featured a complete team defensive effort led by defensemen Andrew Portnoy, Tyler Devore, John Spagnola, Paul Kimmelmen, and Matt D’aloia. The defense completely smothered the Pequannock offense and limited them to few scoring opportunities. The offense was led by Jeff Celniker who scored three times, Billy Burgoyne and Joe Spagnola, who scored twice each, and Geoff Smith, Corey Carnahan and Alec Fernandez who each added one goal. Mountain Lakes improves to a 10-2-1 record.
Jeff Celniker had a hat trick to lead Mountain Lakes past Mendham 7-2. Billy Burgoyne, Geoff Smith, Elliot Vorel and Alec Fernandez each added a goal in the victory. The defense was led by Tyler Devore who added to the offensive with two assists and Andrew Portnoy who was outstanding with his efforts in clearing out the front of the Lakers net, as well as Goalie Gavin Spray who was solid in net.
The Lakers offensive power was just too much for Jefferson to handle as they crushed the Falcons 11-1 in a shortened game due to the 10 goal mercy rule. Corey Carnahan, Jeff Celniker each had hat tricks; Elliot Vorel added two goals; and Captains Nick D'Aloia and Billy Burgoyne added a goal each. Johnny Dagger scored his first varsity goal. Gavin Spray was solid in net stopping 25 of 26 shots. The Lakers are scheduled for a re-match of hard hitting Mendham this Saturday night at 8:00 at Mennen arena.
Joe Spagnola led Mountain Lakes with 3 goals and 3 assists to defeat Halverson Division foe Mendham 7-3. After leading by only 4-3 with 6 minutes left in the 3rd period, the Lakers pulled ahead on power play goals and tight defense. Captain Billy Burgoyne scored twice with an assist, and Elliot Vorel and Jeff Celneker added a goal and an assist each. Captain Nick D’Aloia also added 2 assists on the night. Mendham proved to be a challenging opponent with strong physical play. The Lakers responded with physical offensive play from Alec Fernandez and Geoffrey Smith who both demonstrated fierce back checking. The Lakers defense utilized powerful body checks to keep Mendham from producing any type of rally. The physical defensive play was led by defensemen Tyler Devore, Andrew Portnoy and John Spagnola. Goalie Gavin Spray had another strong performance in net. Coach Lio felt that Mountain Lakes proved to be the more disciplined team in the 3rd period, which was truly the difference in the game. The Lakers face off against Jefferson next, on Wednesday night 1/12/11 at 4:00pm Mennen Arena.
On Thursday 1/6/11, the Mountain Lakes Ice Hockey team defeated Mennen Division opponent, Kinnelon on a strong performance by its defense. The Defense, led by defensemen Elliot Vorel and Tyler Devore kept the Kinnelon skaters off stride and limited Kinnelon to just 19 shots on goal. The defensive penalty kill team, led by defenseman Andrew Portnoy, limited the Kinnelon scoring chances even though the Lakers were a man down 6 times in the game. Defenseman John Spagnola added a much needed physical presence to the defensive core. Goalie Gavin Spray was terrific all night putting in a workman like performance in goal. Offensively, the Lakers did what they have been successful at this year, and that is to score goals. Winger Jeff Celniker led the way with 2 goals and 1 assist, followed by winger Billy Burgoyne with 1 goal and 2 assists, center Joe Spagnola with 2 goals and winger Alec Fernandez with 1 goal. Coach Mark Lio was pleased with the boys’ efforts and hopes that this win will propel the Lakers to a higher level of play for the remainder of the season. Next up for the Lakers will be Mendham on 1/10/11.
The Lakers enter into 2011 with a 5-2-1 record after winning the holiday tournament at South Mountain Arena over Verona 13-5. The Holiday tournament which also boasted wins over Livingston and Nutley saw the Lakers offensive fire power explode by scoring 41 goals in four games and outscore their opponents 41-17. Highlights of the tournament included Gaven Spray recording his first three wins as varsity goalie; Jeff Celniker scoring seven goals in one game to set a Lakers single goal scoring record; and the defense recording a shutout against Nutley. Next up for the Lakers will be Kinnelon on Thursday 1/6/11.
After a disappointing defeat against Morristown Beard 7-1, a game which saw Mountain Lakes come out flat and never recover, Coach Mark Lio drilled home the message that the Lakers must skate hard from the first shift to the last in order to compete in 2010. In front of an energetic student body wearing orange in what was advertised as an “orange out”, the Lakers did skate hard. The Lakers defeated Halvorson Division foe Morristown by the score of 9-4 for the victory. Elliott Vorel and Jeff Celniker; who at times looked like they were putting on a clinic on how to pass and score; both recorded hat tricks as well as 3 assists each to lead the offensive attack. Joe Spagnola, returning from injury, added two goals and an assist and Andrew Portnoy also added a goal. Captain Nick D’Aloia continued his unselfish play by adding two assists, and defensemen John Spagnola had his first Laker point with an assist.
And speaking of firsts, goalie Paul Kimmelmen nailed down his first Laker victory by stopping 23 of the 27 Morristown shots. Defensemen Geoffery Smith, Tyler Devore and Alec Fernandez protected Kimmelmen and kept the Morristown offense from gaining any momentum in the game.
Captain Billy Burgoyne sustained a head injury in the first period and missed the remainder of the game. Coach Lio welcomes the break in the game schedule and expects Burgoyne to be healthy for the Lakers next battle.
The Lakers now are at a 2-1 record and 2-0 in the Halvorson Division. Next up on the schedule is the highly ranked power house, Morris Knolls on Monday 12/20
After a 3-0 pre-season, which included wins over Mount Olive, Parsippany, and Ramsey; Mountain Lakes Lakers have high hopes for the 2010-2011 season. Coach Mark Lio along with assistant coaches Dave Drollinger and Danny Lio were impressed with the boys’ hard work and effort in practices and agreed that it was the best pre-season practices ever. The team has a grueling schedule with fierce competition, and if they can remain healthy and on the ice, expectations are high for this Laker ice hockey team.
Saturday, December 5, ML Lakers opened up their 2010-2011 season with an impressive win over Jefferson. Captains Billy Burgoyne and Nick D’ALoia spoke to the team prior to the game and impressed on their teammates that ML Lakers needed to make a statement by skating hard and staying mentally tough against Jefferson. The captains reminded their teammates that Jefferson is the pre-season pick to win the Halvorson and that they have become an arch rival to ML through their aggressive and physical play. The boys proved that they were ready for the challenge.
After falling behind 1-0, Captain Billy Burgoyne blasted one of his now ML famous blistering slap shots over the Jefferson goalie’s left shoulder to tie the score 1-1.
Again after falling behind 2-1, Mountain Lakes tied the score and then never looked back. Elliot Vorel (4 goals) showed his dominance on the ice with great presence and vision and Jeff Celniker (2 goals) showed why he was one of the league’s leading goal scorers last year with great second effort offensive rushes. Captains Billy Burgoyne (2 goals) and Nick D’Aloia (1 goal) led by example on the ice. The scoring was rounded out by Doug Lappe’s goal late in the 3rd period for a 10-5 victory.
Defensively, goalie Jared Bernstein recorded his first varsity victory. Defensemen Andrew Portnoy, Tyler Devore, Geoffrey Smith and John Spagnola kept the Jefferson offense and their fans in check all night with the help of some great back checking by forwards Ryan Gecawich and Corey Carnahan.
ML Lakers next challenge does not get any easier, as they take on an always talented Morristown Beard team on Thursday 12/9 at Mennen Arena at 8:00. ML fans came out in fine numbers for this opening game against Jefferson, and now with excitement building for this team already, fans should arrive early and catch all the action of this dynamic ML icer team’s quest for the Halvorson Cup!
